The City of San Francisco is a city that is rich in history and offers culture and experience for its millions of visitors. SF is home to countless museums, galleries, and exhibits. One of the most important cultural institutions in The City is the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.

About The de Young Museum in San Francisco

The de Young Museum in San Francisco is certainly a must visit museum when visiting The City. This museum is one of the two fine arts museums in San Francisco, of which the second is Legion of Honor, located in The Presidio. The de Young Museum was named after its founder, M.H de Young and was established in 1859. During the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, the building was badly damaged, which made it shut down for over a year and a half to undergo reconstruction, before reopening in Golden Gate Park.

The de Young Museum underwent a full reconstruction and is not a marvel of art, architecture, and engineering, and anchors the museum heart of Golden Gate Park. The building is clad in copper and offers a tower observation deck with expansive views of The City.

The collections within the museum consist of historic American arts that could be dated back to the 17th century, through the 21st century. These collections include over a thousand paintings, about 800 sculptures and about 3000 objects of decoration. There are also international contemporary collections within de Young’s museum. Some of these contemporary collections can be dated back to 1988 and one of its most recent contemporary collections includes “WALL OF LIGHT HORIZON” in 2005. There are also a lot of textiles and costumes with over 13,000 artifacts in several collections, coming from around the world. You can also see collections from central, east, west and southern Africa, which includes some artifacts from Sudan and the Guinea Coast, there are also a couple of pieces from the Pacific. de Young Museum brings a lot of culture and rich history from around the world under one roof. It’s a pleasurable experience exploring this museum that is why most tourists would call it a “must visit” museum in San Francisco.

The de Young Museum is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM except on holidays. The Museum offers many special exhibits and events and is a vital public place. Tickets to the de Young also offer admission to the Legion of Honor. Tickets can be purchased online at $15 for Adult, $10 for Senior, and $6 for Student Admission. Children are admitted for free.
